Termites Pesty Little Creatures

Cartoons make termites seem like very hungry little pests eating the wood out of houses until the house falls in. While they are not this bad they can destroy a home if they are not taken care of. Termites have been known to create more damage to home than a tornado and termites are not covered by the insurance policy. The termites treatment price is small when compared to peace of mind.

How to Tell if You Have Termites

There are ways to tell if you have a termite infestation. These are:

1.  When you tap on the wood in  your  home and it sounds hollow.
2.  If you see cracked wood, bubbling paint or termite droppings.
3.  If you start seeing a temporarily swarm of winged insects in the home or in the soil around the house.
4.  Little mud tubes on the outside walls, on the wooden beams, or in the crawl spaces.
5.  Little discarded wings.

Prior to calling in the termite experts there are some things that you can do to help protect  your home. You will want to eliminate the conditions and food that these little pests thrive on.  The things that you can do prior to calling the pest control man are:

1.  Make sure that there is no moisture around the house. This includes standing water on the roof as well as stopped up gutters and downspouts.
2.  Make sure that the wood on your home is not touching the soil.
3.  If you use firewood keep it from touching the house.
4.  Put screens on all of the outside vents.

Get Rid of Termites

Once you find signs that make you think you have termites it is time to call in the professionals. Termite treatment cost is  minor when you think of the damage the bugs can do to your home.   While you might be able to kill termites yourself you may not be able to get rid of the whole infestation. A professional will not only know where to look and what to look for they know the best method to get rid of the creatures.

Termite professionals use two basic methods to get rid of the bugs.

1.  Using liquid.
2.  Bating

When using the liquid method the pest control specialist will take a tank with an injector and inject poison into the soil around the  house.  The termites end up taking the chemical back to others in the colonies and it kills them all. The specialist is also likely to drill some small holes in the patio slabs or inside the home in order to create an area around the house that is continuously filled. With the pesticides available today it does not take as much poison nor as many holes.

When using baiting small bait stations are placed in and around the home. The bait stations also contain a poison. Baiting while is good a method as using liquid it does take longer to get rid of the termites.

If you are thinking of buying a new house you should have it inspected prior to purchasing it. The inspector can tell you if the house has termites or if other houses in the area have termites. This will let you know if you house is liable to become infested.
